The Economic Community of West African States ECOWAS under the chairmanship of the Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reeled out measures to restore sanity to Niger Republic.
This decision became necessary following the attempted coup in the country by the National Guard during which President Mohamed Bazoum and members of his family were taken hostage.
The ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit which was held in the state capital of Nigeria Abuja was basically anchored on the urgent need to protect African democracy, reposition the continent for positive development and pave way for sustainable growth and prosperity for all member States.
Part of the communique issued at the end of the meeting include a declaration of No Fly Zone, sealing of land, sea and air borders, freezing of all the country’s accounts with member nations.
Similarly, the summit called for immediate release and restoration of President Mohamed Bazoum, noting that he remains the only legally recognized president of Niger Republic.
The summit equally expressed readiness to deploy all constitutional means, including use of force if necessary to restore normalcy in the country.
