In a statement signed by its Director-General, His Lordship Justice Alpha Ikpeama, the United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) has thrown its weight behind the South-East senators in their call for a comprehensive review of the proposed tax bill. The Council lauded the senators for prioritizing fairness and equity in the legislative process and urged senators from other regions to emulate their proactive approach.
UNIEC stressed the need for the tax bill to be reviewed and implemented in a way that considers the unique contributions and circumstances of each region, ensuring balanced development and unity across the nation.
Speaking on behalf of the Council, His Lordship Justice Alpha Ikpeama stated:
“We commend the South-East senators for taking a principled stand in advocating for a proper review of the tax bill. Their approach underscores the importance of fairness and regional equity in policy-making. We call on senators from other regions to follow this example to ensure that the tax bill reflects the diverse realities of our nation.”
UNIEC also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt people-centered policies and avoid decisions influenced by ethnic or religious biases. The Council urged the President to consider the welfare of all Nigerians in his decision-making process.
“We urge the President to continue taking decisions that reflect compassion, inclusivity, and a commitment to the well-being of all Nigerians. The United Igbo Elders Council stands ready to support policies that have a human face and foster unity and development,” Justice Ikpeama added.
The Council reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with all stakeholders to promote policies that uphold fairness and justice while advancing the nation’s collective progress. UNIEC called for bipartisan cooperation among legislators to ensure the effective review and implementation of the tax bill for the benefit of all Nigerians.
