Prominent human rights lawyer, Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has called on the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo, to ensure that the newly established “Agunechemba” security outfit remains apolitical and dedicated to its core mandate of safeguarding lives and property.
In a statement issued on Monday in Awka, the state capital, Ejiofor warned against the politicization of the security force, urging the government to guard against its misuse as a tool for oppression, intimidation, or harassment of political opponents. He emphasized the need for the security outfit to maintain its focus on protecting Ndi Anambra and fostering unity.
Ejiofor, an indigene of Anambra State, noted that the state’s history of security challenges requires a collaborative effort to restore its lost glory. He called on citizens to support the initiative while urging the government to uphold transparency and fairness.
The statement reads in part:
*”I have carefully reviewed the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025, which establishes the ‘Agunechemba’ security outfit. This initiative presents a golden opportunity to build a robust and impartial security framework for the benefit of Ndi Anambra.
As the November 2025 gubernatorial election draws closer, it is imperative that the Agunechemba security outfit remains free from political interference. It must not be allowed to fall into the hands of political predators or be used as a tool for oppression or harassment. Instead, its fundamental mission of ensuring the security and welfare of the people must be safeguarded at all costs.
Security is a shared responsibility. Citizens must work hand in hand with the government to rebuild Anambra State’s reputation for peace and safety. Together, we can achieve a more secure and prosperous homeland.”*
Ejiofor concluded by urging all stakeholders to prioritize the common good over political interests, reiterating the need for integrity and professionalism in the management of the security force.
