Calls for decisive action and advocates for marital harmony

The Director General of the South-East Governors Forum, Senator Uche Ekwunife, has expressed shock and deep sadness over the tragic death of Mrs. Chioma Nwaka, who was allegedly set ablaze by her husband, Mr. Obiozor Nwaka, in Eziezekwe village, Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
In a strongly-worded statement, Senator Ekwunife condemned the act as “inhumane, despicable, and an affront to the sanctity of life.” She described the incident as a grave reminder of the urgent need to address the menace of domestic violence in the society.
The Senator commended the swift response of the Anambra State Police Command in detaining the suspect and initiating investigations. She urged the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, and the Homicide Unit to ensure a thorough and expedited investigation, with a commitment to justice for the victim and her family. “The law must take its full course, and perpetrators of such heinous acts must be held accountable to serve as a deterrent to others,” Ekwunife stated.
Addressing the broader issue of marital conflict, Senator Ekwunife urged couples to prioritize dialogue, mutual respect, and understanding as the foundation of their relationships. She stressed the importance of seeking professional or spiritual guidance during moments of marital strife rather than resorting to violence, which only leads to pain and destruction.
“Marriage should be a partnership built on love, trust, and the collective effort to nurture a safe and harmonious home for all, especially the children. This tragic incident, which has left six innocent children without their mother, is a stark reminder that violence is never the answer,” she said.
Ekwunife further called on community leaders, faith-based organizations, and advocacy groups to intensify efforts in promoting awareness about the dangers of domestic violence and encouraging victims to speak up and seek help.
The Senator also extended her heartfelt condolences to the family of Mrs. Chioma Nwaka and the entire community of Abagana, urging them to remain strong during this difficult time. She reiterated her commitment to championing initiatives that protect vulnerable individuals, particularly women and children, from all forms of violence.
“Let us work together to build homes and communities free of violence and uphold the sanctity of life in all circumstances,” Ekwunife concluded.
