As the world marks International Women’s Day 2025 today, March 8th, the Director General of the South-East Governors Forum, Senator Uche Ekwunife, has issued a strong message advocating for the empowerment and protection of women and young girls, particularly in Anambra State and the South-East region.
Her statement, released by her Media Office on Saturday, aligns with this year’s theme, ‘Accelerate Action’, which calls for urgent, strategic efforts to dismantle systemic barriers that hinder women’s progress.
Senator Ekwunife acknowledged the strides made in gender equality but emphasized that women and girls in the South-East still face critical challenges, including gender-based violence and underrepresentation in leadership. She stressed the need for intentional policies, robust advocacy, and community-driven initiatives to create a safer and more inclusive society where women can thrive.
Recognizing the pivotal role of mothers in shaping future generations, Ekwunife called for greater economic and social empowerment programs to support them, particularly in areas of entrepreneurship, maternal healthcare, and skill acquisition. She also urged stakeholders to prioritize the education and mentorship of young girls, ensuring they have equal opportunities to pursue careers in leadership, technology, and innovation.
Speaking on the broader national perspective, Ekwunife highlighted the importance of collective action across Nigeria to bridge gender gaps and advance policies that protect women’s rights, enhance economic participation, and eliminate harmful cultural practices.
She commended ongoing efforts by the South-East governors forum ably led by His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodimma CON, Governor of Imo State, in implementing the provisional 35% affirmative action but insisted that achieving full gender parity requires a commitment from governments, the private sector, and civil society to enforce reforms that uplift and empower women.
In her closing remarks, Senator Ekwunife reaffirmed her dedication to championing women’s rights and fostering a South-East where every woman and girl is valued, protected, and given the opportunity to excel. She urged all Nigerians to support this cause, emphasizing that a society that uplifts its women is one that secures a prosperous future for all.
