Launches Anti-Cultism and Drug Awareness Campaign

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State Police Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has instituted a university scholarship scheme for the three best-performing students in the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
CP Orutugu made this announcement while launching a statewide campaign against cultism and drug abuse in both primary and secondary schools across Anambra State.
Speaking at Igwebuike Secondary School, Awka, the Police Commissioner emphasized that the scholarship initiative is open to all students, regardless of their financial background. He explained that the primary objective is to motivate young learners to remain dedicated to their academic pursuits and strive for excellence.
He also urged students to stay away from drugs and cultism, stressing that many individuals involved in cult-related activities begin their journey into crime through drug abuse.
“I want to announce today that the best three students in the next WAEC examination from this school will receive full university scholarships under my personal initiative,” CP Orutugu stated.
During a similar engagement at St. Patrick’s College, Awka, the Commissioner encouraged students to respect their teachers and heed the guidance of their parents.
In a proactive move to enhance security awareness among students, he also shared his personal phone number, urging them to report any suspicious activities in their surroundings.
“If you see something, say something. I am providing my phone number so you can reach me directly whenever you notice anything unusual in your environment,” he assured the students.
Stakeholders Commend Initiative
The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, praised CP Orutugu’s initiative, describing him as a refined, God-fearing, and courageous officer. She noted that crime rates in the state have significantly reduced since he assumed office.
Mrs. Obinabo also advised students to be vigilant and cautious about the people around them. She urged them to immediately raise an alarm if anyone attempts to touch them inappropriately, emphasizing the need to protect their dignity and prevent cases of abuse.
“Governor Charles Soludo’s administration has ensured free and quality education from primary to senior secondary school levels. I urge you all to take your studies seriously and aspire to become the great leaders of tomorrow,” she added.
The anti-cultism and drug awareness campaign is part of the Anambra State Police Command’s broader efforts to curb youth involvement in crime and substance abuse, fostering a safer and more disciplined learning environment across the state.
