The Electricity Consumers Right Network (ECRN), alongside concerned stakeholders, has issued a strong call for immediate action to address the persistent electricity challenges plaguing the region.
Their demands, which include the unbundling of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), highlight growing dissatisfaction with the company’s monopoly and service delivery.
In a statement signed by Osita Obi, National Coordinator of ECRN, and Emeka Ral, Secretary, in Awka, Anambra State on Thursday, the group outlined the adverse effects of EEDC’s dominance in the electricity sector, citing unreliable power supply, erratic billing, and poor customer service.
They also condemned EEDC’s manufacturing of electricity meters, describing it as a conflict of interest that enables the company to regulate itself to the detriment of consumers.

Unbundling of EEDC to foster competition, efficiency, and improved service delivery.
Independent power plants established by the state government to provide alternative electricity sources.
Legislation to regulate electricity billing, ensuring transparency and accountability.
An end to EEDC’s meter manufacturing operations to prevent unfair advantages.
Civil disobedience across all LGAs to protest against the current system.
The ECRN called on the Anambra State Government, the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and the Federal Government to take immediate steps in addressing these issues.
“We urge all electricity consumers to rise up and assert their rights. We deserve a power sector that prioritizes efficiency, affordability, and transparency,” the statement read.
The protest against EEDC’s monopoly is gaining momentum, with consumers rallying for systemic reforms that will usher in a brighter and more reliable energy future.
