—As Senator Ekwunife condoles with the bereaved family

The Director General South-East Governors Forum, Distinguished Senator Uche Ekwunife CON, has expressed profound condolences to the family of the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, lauding his pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
She emphasized the importance of honoring Nwosu’s legacy, urging that the recent developments in the National Assembly should not deter such recognition.
Ekwunife highlighted that both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Governors of the South-East possess the authority to commemorate Nwosu’s contributions without necessitating legislative motions or bills.
Appreciating the South-East governors for their support to the bereaved family, the SEGOF DG expressed confidence that the Governors would take steps to honor and immortalize Nwosu. She stated that the South-East governors has rendered support to the bereaved family, while urging them to do more by immortalize him for his unparalleled contributions to Nigeria’s democratic process.
Furthermore, Senator Ekwunife called upon President Tinubu to name a befitting institution after Professor Nwosu and to confer a posthumous national honor on him. This, she believes, would serve as a fitting tribute to Nwosu’s steadfastness, courage, and dedication to democratic principles.
Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who passed on at the age of 83, is renowned for his tenure as Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) from 1989 to 1993. During this period, he conducted the June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s freest and fairest elections.
Despite the Senate’s recent rejection of a motion to immortalize the former INEC Chairman, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Senator Ekwunife remains steadfast in her belief that appropriate recognition of his contributions to nation building and democracy will be done by the federal and state governments.
