In keeping with her tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day with her domestic staff, the Director General of the South-East Governors Forum (SEGOF), Distinguished Senator Uche Ekwunife, CON, hosted her house helps, drivers, orderly, chef, security personnel, and other staff members.
Speaking at the gathering, Ekwunife described them as the backbone of her household, emphasizing that she considers herself a representative of their mothers, ensuring they receive the care and support they would have if they were home on Mothering Sunday.
The SEGOF DG acknowledged that her success would not be possible without the dedication of her domestic staff, whom she considers an integral part of her family. She highlighted the deep bond they share, noting that none of them have been with her for less than 15 years.
“My philosophy is that when you invest in someone else’s child, you are indirectly securing a better future for your own. It fills me with joy when my children return home and share stories of people I have supported expressing gratitude for my kindness.
“I am proud to say that many of my domestic staff have gone on to achieve great things. I take their education seriously, ensuring they attend university, graduate, and secure meaningful employment under my guidance.
“Today, my former cook is a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. Another works at the Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, while one has secured a position with the Federal Ministry of Environment. The list goes on, proving that someone may be a driver today but a CEO tomorrow.
“Each time we dine and celebrate together, I use the opportunity to encourage them to take pride in their work, as consistency and dedication open doors to remarkable opportunities,” she stated.
Staff Express Gratitude
During the event, several members of the Senator’s domestic staff shared their personal experiences and expressed their heartfelt appreciation.
Sunday, a security guard, described his journey from being a gatekeeper to becoming a university graduate, crediting his success to the opportunities provided by Senator Ekwunife.
“I see my employment as a privilege, and I have managed it well. Working in this household has been a rare opportunity, and I deeply appreciate the Senator’s kindness and generosity. May God continue to bless her and her family,” he said.
Mr. Ovot, the chef, testified that his life had been completely transformed since joining the Senator’s household. He described his experience as a journey of “multiple blessings” and prayed for her continued success as a reward for her generosity.
Security officer Mr. Destiny and driver Boji echoed similar sentiments, commending Senator Ekwunife for her kindness and unwavering support in their lives.
Elochukwu, a beneficiary of the Senator’s scholarship program, expressed his profound gratitude for being sponsored from secondary school to university. Currently in his final year studying Law at Baze University, Abuja, he described Ekwunife as his “mentor, guardian, and mother.”
“How else could my family have raised about ₦8 million annually for tuition alone, not to mention accommodation and welfare? Studying at the prestigious Baze University feels like a dream come true. Each time I reflect on my journey, I feel on top of the world.
“May God continue to bless the Most Distinguished Senator Uche Ekwunife, CON (Iyom), so that she will never lack anything she desires, because she truly deserves it,” Elochukwu stated.
Senator Ekwunife’s Personal Assistant, Chima Charles, also described her as a “support system,” highlighting the multiple business opportunities she has provided him alongside his official role. He expressed his commitment to remaining “focused, consistent, and productive” as a way of showing appreciation for her generosity.
Commitment to Their Welfare
Senator Ekwunife concluded the event by offering prayers for the good health, prosperity, and continued blessings of God upon all her domestic staff. She assured them that her success is their success and promised to continue supporting their growth and development.
“You are all a part of my family, and as I grow, you will grow with me. My hope is that you will also inspire others through your dedication and hard work,” she said.
The celebration ended on a joyous note, with staff members expressing their deep appreciation for the Senator’s kindness and unwavering commitment to their well-being and also joining her in cutting the Mother’s Day cake.
