Calls for Better Welfare for National Heroes

Gubernatorial candidate of the Accord Party for the November 8, 2025 Anambra governorship election, Sir CC Onyeze, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Nigerian football legend, Chairman Christian Chukwu, describing him as an outstanding icon whose legacy will remain etched in the annals of Nigerian sports history.
In an emotional tribute, Onyeze extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late football hero, the people of Enugu State, the wider Nigerian football community, and the nation at large.
“Chairman Christian Chukwu was not just a football icon; he was a living testimony of patriotism, sacrifice, and national unity,” Onyeze said. “From his days at Nike Grammar School to captaining the Green Eagles to Nigeria’s first Africa Cup of Nations victory, and later achieving the same feat as a coach, his life was a beacon of pride and inspiration.”
Onyeze lamented the recent spate of losses within the football community, including legends such as Christian Isiadinso, Kenneth Abana, Mecha, and Emele, which he says reflects a troubling national neglect of heroes who served the country with distinction.
He acknowledged and commended previous Anambra administrations led by Mr. Peter Obi, Chief Willie Obiano, and Governor Charles Soludo for their efforts in supporting aging sports veterans, regardless of their state of origin.
“However, more must be done,” Onyeze stressed. “If by the grace of God and the will of the people I am elected Governor of Anambra State, I will make it a duty to care for and celebrate our living legends, ensuring they receive not just stipends, but honor, respect, and a legacy worthy of their sacrifice.”
Calling on all levels of government to rise to the occasion, Onyeze concluded his statement with a powerful appeal: “Let us not wait for another obituary to remind us of our national amnesia. Let us rise and act, so that the likes of Chairman Christian Chukwu will know that their sacrifices were not in vain.”
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the football icon and hoped his legacy would ignite a new wave of appreciation for national heroes.
