The APC Deputy Governorship Candidate, Senator Uche Ekwunife, CON, was honoured with the unveiling of her statue at the 2025 National New Yam Festival in Igbo-Ukwu, an event steeped in cultural elegance and tradition.

On Saturday, the Igbo-Ukwu community in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State came alive as the National New Yam Festival (Iri Ji Ndigbo), themed “Showcasing the Best of Igbo Culture and Hospitality”, unfolded at the National Yam House, Etiti Village.

The festival, conducted by the traditional ruler of Igbo-Ukwu, His Royal Highness Igwe Alexander Ejikemeuwa Azike, the Idu III, featured colourful displays of Igbo heritage and the unveiling of Senator Ekwunife’s statue in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the community. The honour was performed by Hon. Dr. Obi Asika (Ojinnaka), Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Abuja, represented by Chief Edozie Obiajulu, the Council’s Southeast Liaison Officer.

In her address, Senator Ekwunife expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, calling it a profound honour to have her statue unveiled before the Igbo-Ukwu monarch, his wife, and the entire community. She credited the moment to God’s grace, reminding all that “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

Ekwunife reaffirmed her dedication to preserving and promoting Igbo culture, urging Ndi-Igbo not to lose touch with their rich heritage in the face of modernization. She emphasized that the New Yam Festival remains a powerful unifying symbol for the Igbo people, one that must be upheld and celebrated wholeheartedly.

Reflecting on her personal connection to the community, she remarked: “As the first titled woman in this town, I am pleased that the respect accorded to me continues today. I will work closely with our Royal Father, Igwe Alexander Ejikemeuwa Azike, to elevate this festival, making it even more befitting, glamorous, and remarkable in the years to come.”

The 2025 National New Yam Festival not only highlighted the vibrancy of Igbo tradition but also underscored Igbo-Ukwu’s role as a guardian of culture while celebrating leaders who have left indelible marks on the community’s growth and heritage.
