After four months of suspension due to insecurity, residents of Isseke Community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State will resume church services this Sunday.
Worship activities at St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish and St. Mary’s Anglican Parish were halted in June when gunmen stormed both churches, firing shots and ordering worshippers to disperse.
Peace began returning to the community on September 25, when over 130 youths and local leaders mobilized, confronted the armed men, and reclaimed their town.
During a visit to Isseke, this reporter observed that markets, schools, and farmlands were overgrown, with visible signs of long abandonment.
Rev. Fr. Obidiegwu Chukwuemeka Ernest, Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish, expressed joy over the restoration of peace.
“We thank God that we can finally celebrate Mass again after months of fear. We are clearing the compound for Sunday’s 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Masses. God has answered our prayers,” he said.
Similarly, Rev. Princewill Usoetu and DSO Ezeani of St. Mary’s Anglican Church confirmed that services will resume this Sunday, marking the end of three years of gunmen attacks.
“We urge government to help us rebuild our destroyed churches, schools, and health centers,” they appealed.
Hon. Thaddeus Elukaoha, Special Assistant to Governor Charles Soludo on Assembly Matters, commended the courage of the youths and appreciated security agencies for their support.
“Isseke people have taken back their land. We thank the Police, Army, and Agunechemba for their help, but we still need more reinforcements to sustain peace,” he said.
