The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has continued to grapple with a wave of high-profile resignations as one of its prominent figures, Rt. Hon. S.K.E Udeh-Okoye, on Monday, October 13, 2025, formally announced his exit from the party.
In a letter addressed to the Ward Chairman of the PDP in Agbogugu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, the former National Secretary of the party lamented what he described as the steady erosion of the founding ideals of the PDP; a party once regarded as Africa’s largest political movement.
Udeh-Okoye, who previously served as a Member of the Enugu State House of Assembly and National Youth Leader of the PDP, expressed deep disappointment that the party has “lost its moral compass and ideological direction.”
“The PDP that once stood as a beacon of hope for democratic governance has regrettably lost its way,” he wrote. “Over time, I have watched with increasing concern as the ideals and vision of our founding fathers, built on the principles of unity, justice, and equity, have been eroded.”
The former National Secretary noted that his decision came after long reflection, adding that he could no longer, in good conscience, remain in a system that has deviated so far from its original purpose.
Political observers view Udeh-Okoye’s resignation as another sign of the PDP’s dwindling influence across Nigeria, particularly in the South East where internal disunity and leadership crises have continued to weaken the party’s grassroots structures.
His departure adds to the growing list of senior PDP figures who have recently quit the party, citing a lack of internal democracy, poor leadership vision, and ideological disarray.
As the PDP struggles to reposition itself ahead of future elections, Udeh-Okoye’s resignation underscores the deepening cracks within the once dominant party that led Nigeria for sixteen consecutive years before losing power in 2015.
