A former commissioner and ex-local government chairman, Vitus Okechi, has been elected as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, with a firm promise to reposition the party and return it to power.
Okechi emerged at the PDP State Congress held in Enugu on March 14, where delegates gathered to elect new party executives. His election is seen as a strategic move by party stakeholders to strengthen leadership and restore unity within the party.
In his acceptance speech, Okechi thanked party members for their confidence in him and pledged to run an inclusive administration that would accommodate all interests within the PDP.
He emphasized his commitment to rebuilding the party’s grassroots structures across the state, drawing from his experience as both a former commissioner and a local government chairman.
“Our priority is to reunite the party, energise our base, and put the PDP back on the path of victory in Enugu State,” Okechi said.
He further called on members to remain loyal and committed, stressing that collective effort and discipline would be key to achieving the party’s objectives.
Party faithful and stakeholders expressed optimism that Okechi’s leadership experience at both state and local levels would help reposition the PDP ahead of future elections.
Observers believe his emergence signals a renewed push by the party to regain its political strength and relevance in Enugu State.
