President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the establishment of a special welfare fund dedicated to supporting members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, particularly those wounded in service and the families of fallen heroes.
The announcement, made as part of activities marking his 74th birthday, underscores the President’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of military personnel safeguarding the nation’s peace and unity.
According to the President, he has directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to create a dedicated account for the fund, which will provide direct support to injured service members, as well as widows, widowers, and children of those who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
In a remarkable personal gesture, President Tinubu revealed that all his salaries since assuming office will serve as seed funding for the initiative, regardless of existing insurance and welfare provisions available to military personnel.
“This is not charity. It is duty. And we will fulfil it,” the President declared, emphasizing the moral obligation of the nation to care for its defenders. He further called on State Governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, and well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the fund, noting that details of the account would be made public in due course.
The initiative is undoubtedly a significant step toward strengthening the welfare framework for Nigeria’s Armed Forces and honouring the enduring sacrifices of those who stand in harm’s way for the country.
