The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 General Election.
The decision was reached on Friday, April 10, 2026, during a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), where key electoral matters were reviewed, including the proposed revalidation exercise.
In a press statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission explained that the exercise, though critical, would now be deferred to a later date.
INEC described the voter revalidation exercise as a vital component of its constitutional mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters. The process is designed to verify and update voter records, ensure accuracy of personal data, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, and strengthen the integrity of the electoral register. It also provides an avenue for registered voters to confirm and correct their details where necessary.
Despite the postponement, the Commission reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the conduct of free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections across Nigeria.
The announcement signals INEC’s focus on preparations for the 2027 General Election while ensuring that reforms to the voter register are carried out at an appropriate time.
