Sir Chidi Charles, founder of the Onyeze Humanitarian Foundation, has awarded a full scholarship to Ekene Nwanonaku, a 10-year-old child abuse victim who had endured significant mistreatment while working as a house help.
According to the victim’s mother, Mrs. Ukamaka Nwanonaku, the incident was sparked when Ekene declined to release the house key to an individual returning from Ghana without confirming permission. Following instructions to release the key, he complied, but the situation later escalated upon Mrs. Ezekigbo’s return, resulting in harm to Ekene.
However, when Mrs Ezekigbo returned from the market and interrogated Ekene on his encounter with the visitor, she became enraged. The woman reportedly dragged Ekene into the house, stripped him, locked the door, tied his mouth and hands, chaining his legs. In an act of extreme cruelty, she started pouring hot candle wax over his body, leaving him with severe burns.
She allegedly continued the abuse in front of her own child, and afterwards abandoned Ekene for three days without food or water, under lock and key. According to Ekene, he was miraculously released from the ropes and chain, and instructed by a familiar voice to start running towards a particular direction, which he did till he found help.
Fortunately, the case came to light when the Ihiala LGA Ambassador of the Onyeze Humanitarian Foundation, through a human rights activist, informed Sir Chidi Charles. Acting swiftly, Sir Charles provided funds for Ekene’s medical treatment.
In a remarkable act of generosity, Sir Chidi Charles has committed to sponsoring Ekene’s education from his current grade in Primary 4 through university. The boy’s father, Mr. Nwanonaku, expressed profound gratitude, offering prayers for Sir Charles and thanking him for his support during this critical time.
