Senator Uche Ekwunife recently shed light on the transformative plans laid out by the Governors of the South-East to propel development and enhance security across the region. As Director General of the South-East Governors Forum (SEGOF), Ekwunife outlined strategic efforts led by Senator Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the All Progressives Governors Forum. She emphasized that the SEGOF is tackling pressing challenges, from security to economic revitalization, to ensure the region’s sustainable growth and improved quality of life.
In addressing the region’s security concerns, Ekwunife highlighted the Governors’ resolve to make the South-East a safe and attractive destination for investors. By deploying advanced technologies and strengthening inter-state intelligence collaboration, they aim to dismantle crime networks and prevent criminals from using state borders as escape routes. This coordinated security effort is designed to create a stable environment that will encourage both local and foreign investment.
The revitalization plan includes six priority sectors: security, industrialization, legislation, power, education, and transportation. Each of these pillars is central to the South-East Governors’ vision of economic transformation. Ekwunife noted that extensive work is underway to revamp abandoned industries, often the economic backbone of the region, through public-private partnerships. The Governors believe these industries can provide substantial employment opportunities and economic stability.
Youth empowerment remains at the forefront, with partnerships established with the Ministries of Trade and Industry and Humanitarian Affairs to support young entrepreneurs and tackle the “Japa Syndrome” through remote job opportunities abroad. Ekwunife shared that this initiative seeks to reduce the migration of skilled youth by offering job opportunities within the region that align with international standards.
On the education front, Ekwunife highlighted the Governors’ commitment to developing an innovative, skills-based curriculum for primary and secondary schools across the South-East. This approach aims to produce graduates equipped with entrepreneurial skills, practical knowledge, and the adaptability required in today’s job market. Additionally, support for specialized fields in universities is intended to position South-East institutions as leaders in targeted industries, thus fostering a new generation of professionals and innovators.
Transportation infrastructure is also receiving attention, with a planned light rail network to enhance connectivity across major cities and towns. This rail system will foster regional integration, reduce traffic congestion, and promote trade. Furthermore, the Governors are working closely with the Federal Government on critical infrastructure projects, including the repair of intra-state roads and the resolution of environmental challenges like the Nanka Gully Erosion, which threatens entire communities.
The Governors are also reviewing recent federal tax reforms to ensure the economic interests of the South-East are safeguarded. In addition, they are actively exploring new energy solutions, including renewable options, to address power deficits, especially in rural areas.
In her statement, Ekwunife affirmed the Governors’ commitment to strengthening local governance structures, enhancing worker welfare through the new minimum wage, and driving regional development in tandem with federal reforms. She lauded Governor Uzodinma for his capable leadership in steering the SEGOF’s agenda, emphasizing that the Forum remains united in achieving its outlined objectives and in advocating for the prosperity and security of the South-East region.
