The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his decisive action in dissolving the Governing Council, Vice-Chancellor, and Registrar of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka.

In a statement issued by Prof. Obi Nwosu, Chief Consultant of the Council, the MDCN described the President’s intervention as a timely move that has safeguarded the integrity of Nigeria’s academic and educational sectors.

Prof. Obi Nwosu stated:

“I sincerely thank Mr. President, Tinubu, for his prompt response and resolve. His actions saved UNIZIK and Nigeria from further shame and calamity.”

He further emphasized the importance of merit in academia, saying:

“This decision confirms that professorship is achieved through true hard work and not through affidavits or dubious practices.”

Nwosu also extended his appreciation to the relevant ministers for their role in addressing the issue, as well as to Nigerians and the media for their advocacy against “evil and impunity.”

The MDCN has been vocal in its opposition to the processes leading to the controversial appointments of Prof. Bernard Odoh as Vice-Chancellor and Barr. Rosemary Nwokike as Registrar, asserting that due process was not followed.

This comes after a prolonged tussle between the university’s Governing Council, led by Ambassador Greg Mbadiwe, and various stakeholders over the Vice-Chancellorship position. The MDCN has consistently challenged the council’s actions, citing a lack of adherence to established procedures.
