The management of Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL), led by its Managing Director, Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, on Monday paid an advocacy visit to the Attorney General & Commissioner for Justice, Enugu State, Hon. Kingsley Udeh.
The visit was part of MEDL’s strategic engagement with critical stakeholders within its operational jurisdiction to foster stronger partnerships and address key industry challenges.
During the meeting, Dr. Mupwaya outlined MEDL’s core objectives, highlighting the persistent challenges of vandalism, energy theft, and meter bypass, which he attributed to significant revenue losses for the company. He solicited the Ministry of Justice’s support in expediting the prosecution of apprehended vandals and enforcing stricter penalties for energy thieves.
The MEDL team also commended the Ministry for its longstanding support and expressed optimism about continued collaboration in tackling these challenges.
Responding, Hon. Udeh reaffirmed the Enugu State Government’s commitment to supporting electricity sector reforms and ensuring a conducive environment for energy distribution. He emphasized that as the first state to initiate a state-centric electricity market, Enugu is fully committed to strengthening legislative measures against energy-related crimes.
“We will do whatever it takes to encourage the growth of the electricity market in the state and to ensure Mainpower succeeds in its business,” Hon. Udeh assured.
He further reiterated that energy theft is a criminal offense and pledged the Attorney General’s office’s support in enacting and enforcing appropriate legislation to deter offenders.
The meeting marks a significant step in enhancing cooperation between the state government and electricity providers to ensure a more efficient and sustainable power sector.
