As the rainy season intensifies across the Southeast, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has issued a strong advisory to customers, urging them to prioritize safety in the use of electricity to avoid preventable hazards associated with wet weather conditions.
The warning was contained in a statement released on Monday by the Group Head, Corporate Communications of EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, who highlighted the increased risk of electrical incidents such as electrocution, fires, and appliance damage during the rainy season.
Ezeh explained that the region’s electricity infrastructure, largely composed of overhead lines, is particularly vulnerable to extreme weather conditions including heavy rainfall, flooding, lightning, and strong winds. These elements can damage power lines, cause electrical faults, and lead to power surges that may destroy home appliances.
“Lightning can strike power lines or buildings, creating dangerous surges and increasing the risk of electrocution. Likewise, strong winds can topple poles and wires, while water-logged areas and downed lines pose life-threatening dangers,” Ezeh stated.
He emphasized that EEDC, as a responsible service provider, is committed to educating the public on best practices for electrical safety during the rainy season. He urged customers to promptly report fallen poles or exposed wires by calling the company’s emergency line: 08150824301.
Ezeh also provided the following safety guidelines:
Avoid contact with electrical installations, especially if there are visible faults.
Do not touch electrical appliances with wet hands.
Keep children away from transformers, poles, and exposed wires.
Refrain from playing in the rain or flooded areas, particularly where electrical infrastructure may be compromised.
Turn off appliances during thunderstorms to avoid power surge damage.
Engage only licensed electricians for electrical repairs or installations.
Ensure proper earthing systems are in place at home to prevent shocks.
