The Anambra State governorship candidate of the ACCORD Party for the 2025 election, Dr. Sir CC Onyeze, has strongly condemned the Edo State reported attack on the presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, which occurred on Tuesday.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Onyeze described the incident as a disturbing affront to Nigeria’s democratic values, stressing that intimidation or violence against opposition figures undermines the country’s political stability and freedom of choice.
“We practice democracy to ensure that eligible aspirants can move and campaign freely across the country without let or hindrance, so this development is worrisome to say the least”
He called on Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to urgently wade into the matter and direct relevant security agencies to investigate the incident and bring perpetrators to justice.
According to Onyeze, guaranteeing the safety of opposition political leaders is essential for credible political participation and for Nigeria to enjoy the full complements of democracy.
“Democracy thrives where dissenting voices are protected, not threatened. Ensuring the safety of all political actors, irrespective of party affiliation, is a constitutional duty and a moral imperative,” he stated.
Onyeze urged security agencies to remain neutral and proactive in safeguarding political activities nationwide, adding that a secure political environment will deepen public trust and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic journey.
