Barrister Donald Amamgbo, the 2025 Senatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election, has strongly condemned the reported attack on Peter Obi and other ADC leaders in Edo State, describing the incident as “a dangerous assault on democracy and an unacceptable attempt to shrink Nigeria’s political space.”
Reacting to the development, Amamgbo said acts of violence or intimidation against opposition figures must be firmly rejected by all well-meaning Nigerians, warning that such actions undermine the country’s democratic foundation.
“Democracy must thrive without fists, weapons or fear. Political competition is not war; it is a contest of ideas. When thugs attack political leaders, they attack the very foundation of our democratic system,” he stated.
The Anambra South senatorial hopeful cautioned that a democracy without vibrant opposition, free political participation and public confidence exists only in name. He stressed that political aspirants must be allowed to move freely across the country to consult, campaign and engage citizens without harassment or violence.
Amamgbo called on security agencies to immediately commence a thorough and transparent investigation into the alleged Edo incident, identify those responsible and bring them to justice without delay.
“There must be consequences. Impunity only breeds more violence. Nigerians deserve a political environment governed by law, not lawlessness,” he added.
While expressing solidarity with the affected leaders, he also urged Obi to review his security arrangements and take necessary measures to safeguard himself and his team, noting that the safety of political actors remains paramount in the current political climate.
He emphasized that Nigerians have a constitutional right to freely choose their leaders at all levels and warned that no group should attempt to suppress that right through intimidation.
Amamgbo also called for restraint, tolerance and political maturity across party lines, insisting that Nigeria’s democracy can only flourish where respect, peaceful engagement and adherence to the rule of law prevail.
