As state government seeks police enforcement in Awka traditional leadership dispute

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on March 18, 2026, paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of Anambra State, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, as part of activities marking the governor’s second term inauguration.
The IGP was represented during the visit at the Government House, Awka, by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the South East Zone, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie.
During the meeting, Governor Soludo congratulated both the Inspector-General and the Deputy Inspector-General on their appointments, noting that their leadership comes at a critical time when enhanced security collaboration is vital for sustaining peace and economic growth in the state.
The governor emphasized the need for continuous synergy between the Nigeria Police Force and the Anambra State Government, assuring of his administration’s commitment to strengthening the state’s security architecture and improving public safety.
He also called for police intervention in resolving traditional leadership disputes in the state, particularly in Awka, as a panel of inquiry constituted by the state government concludes its findings.
Responding, the Deputy Inspector-General, on behalf of the IGP, expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening strategic partnerships with the state government and other security stakeholders to ensure the protection of lives and property.
The DIG was accompanied on the visit by the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc, mnips, PhD. The visit highlights ongoing efforts to deepen collaboration between the police and the Anambra State Government in promoting sustained peace, security, and public safety across the state and the wider South East region.
