In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State Police Command has expressed sympathy with victims of a fire outbreak at the Plumbing Market, Headbridge area of Onitsha, as authorities continue to assess the extent of damage caused by the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, visited the scene on March 22, 2026, where he commiserated with affected traders and assured them of the Command’s support. He emphasized the commitment of the police to safeguarding lives and property in the area, while taking measures to prevent further losses or exploitation by criminal elements.
Preliminary findings, according to the police, suggest that the fire may have been triggered by heat generated from the storage of inflammable materials, particularly pipes, alongside possible non-compliance with fire safety regulations.
While investigations are ongoing, the police boss commended the swift intervention of emergency responders, including the Fire Service and other relevant agencies, noting that their timely response helped contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. He confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident.
The visit also had in attendance the Divisional Police Officer of Headbridge Division, Onyinaya Uche, alongside other key stakeholders in the market.
The Command, however, urged traders and residents to strictly adhere to safety guidelines, particularly in the storage and handling of inflammable materials, to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
