Distinguished Senator Uche Ekwunife (CON) has been honoured with an Award of Excellence for her outstanding service to community development and humanity at the 2026 Women’s/Award Giving Day organized by the Igbo-Ukwu Development Union (IDU), Women Wing, Abuja Branch.
The colourful event, held on May 3, 2026, at Papal’s Ground along Kubwa Expressway, Abuja, drew a distinguished gathering of traditional rulers, political leaders, and members of the Igbo-Ukwu community from across Nigeria.
Ekwunife, who attended as Special Guest of Honour, was celebrated for her enduring commitment to empowering women, supporting the less privileged, and championing developmental initiatives that have positively impacted lives within and beyond Anambra State. The award further reinforces her reputation as a people-oriented leader with a deep sense of service.
In her acceptance remarks, the Senator expressed profound gratitude to the organizers for the recognition, describing the award as both humbling and inspiring. She dedicated the honour to the resilient women of Igbo-Ukwu and Nigerians at large, reaffirming her commitment to advancing initiatives that uplift families, promote education, and strengthen community development.
Ekwunife noted that service to humanity remains the highest calling, emphasizing that leadership must always be anchored on compassion, inclusiveness, and measurable impact. She encouraged women to continue playing active roles in nation-building, stressing that their contributions remain vital to societal progress.
Speaking earlier, Chairman of the occasion, Chief Ezeikemba Chijioke Emeka (Ajiboye), lauded Ekwunife as a distinguished daughter of Igbo-Ukwu whose track record in public service continues to inspire confidence and pride. He described her as a bridge-builder and a symbol of selfless leadership, noting that the award was a fitting recognition of her consistent efforts in touching lives and promoting the welfare of her people.
Chief Emeka further urged leaders at all levels to emulate Ekwunife’s style of leadership, which he said prioritizes service above personal gain, adding that communities thrive when leaders remain committed to the common good.
Also lending his royal blessings, the Royal Father of the Day, HRH Igwe Alex Ejikemeuwa Azike (Idu III of Igbo-Ukwu), offered prayers for Senator Ekwunife, asking God to grant her greater wisdom, strength, and higher opportunities to serve humanity.
The revered monarch commended her dedication to the upliftment of her people and expressed confidence that her future endeavours would bring even greater benefits to society.
The event also featured the presence of notable dignitaries including Chief Rob Ezeife (Father of the Day), Lady Kate Okenu (Mother of the Day), Nono Lady Uju Onyejimbe (Chairlady, IDU Women Wing), Mrs. Chinwendu Ejemegwa (Chairperson, Planning Committee), as well as members of the 10th House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dom Okafor and Rt. Hon. Chief Thomas Ereyitomi.
Activities were rounded off with goodwill remarks, captivating cultural exhibitions, and a resounding call for unity and enduring development within the Igbo-Ukwu community.
