In a heartfelt message marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary, Senator Uche Ekwunife (Iyom), Ph.D., CON, urged Nigerians to rise above the country’s challenges and prioritize unity and collective interest in order to build a brighter future.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey since independence, Ekwunife congratulated citizens and highlighted the significance of the anniversary as a time for reflection and renewed commitment to national progress. “This 64th anniversary of our independence provides a great opportunity for us to reflect on the journey we have traveled as a nation and to look forward to the brighter future we continue to build together,” she stated.
With the theme “Strengthening Our Democracy for a Safer and Prosperous Nation,” Ekwunife applauded the resilience of Nigeria’s democracy and the indomitable spirit of Nigerians. She commended the patriotism and dedication of citizens, particularly civil servants, military personnel, and the youth, acknowledging their key roles in driving national progress. “Our democracy has proven resilient, and the Nigerian spirit remains unshaken despite the challenges we face,” she added.
The senator also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership, particularly through the Renewed Hope Agenda, which she noted has initiated significant transformation across the country. “Despite the challenges we continue to face, his commitment to repositioning Nigeria is commendable,” she remarked.
Ekwunife acknowledged the contributions of South-East governors, with special recognition for Senator Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the South-East Governors Forum, for their efforts in fostering democracy and development in the region. “Their leadership is a beacon of hope for Ndigbo and Nigerians by extension,” she emphasized.
She urged Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers, whose vision of unity gave birth to a strong and independent Nigeria. Ekwunife called on citizens to continue upholding unity, the rule of law, and democracy to ensure that every Nigerian enjoys the benefits of freedom, justice, and equity.
“As we celebrate this momentous day, let us resolve to support one another, to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers, and to pursue the common good with renewed vigor,” Ekwunife concluded, expressing hope that Nigeria will overcome future challenges and stand as a beacon of democracy and progress in Africa.
The senator ended her message with warm wishes for a hopeful, peaceful, and united Independence Day celebration for all Nigerians.
