The newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Professor Bernard Odoh, has unveiled a N70 billion investment plan aimed at transforming the institution over his five-year tenure.
As part of the interim arrangements, Professor Odoh announced the conversion of the university kitchen into the official residence of the Vice Chancellor, pending the completion of the permanent residence. He emphasized that residing on campus is essential for staying connected with university affairs.
According to Professor Odoh, approximately N10 billion of the total investment will be raised through public-private partnerships, focusing on co-funding critical infrastructure and supporting Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
In his address to the university community at the auditorium, Odoh outlined the institution’s roadmap, which includes eleven core projects to be managed by dedicated implementation committees.
Among the highlights of his plan are:
Vice Chancellor’s Residence: Scheduled for completion by June 2026, this will enhance the administrative functions of the Vice Chancellor, reinforce the university’s role-model presence, and foster community engagement.
Housing for Staff and Students: By 2027, affordable housing will be provided for 5,000 students and at least 50 staff members, aiming to improve campus life and boost enrollment.
150-Room Hotel with Event Facilities: A 150-room hotel equipped with meeting and event spaces will be built to provide comfortable, secure accommodation and conference services for visitors to the university.
Additionally, Professor Odoh announced initiatives in renewable energy, including the establishment of a N100 million quasi-endowment fund to support research in sustainable energy solutions. This project will enhance research and development in renewable energy, reduce the university’s carbon footprint, earn carbon credits, and foster sustainability by leveraging intellectual property rights.
