…Urges FG to release allocations pending appeal outcome

In a recent statement, Hon. Chukwujiokem Okeke (Enyioha), Anambra State Chairman of the Action People’s Party (APP), criticized the decision to withhold statutory allocations due to Rivers State, under a Federal High Court ruling. Okeke described this decision as “hasty and detrimental to the state’s democratic progress,” and called for the immediate release of the funds pending the outcome of an appeal filed by the government of Rivers State.
“How can the entire Rivers State citizenry be subjected to this degree of suffering just because of an infraction between the state executive and the legislature?” Okeke questioned, expressing concern over the impact of the decision on the lives of Rivers State citizens, who he noted have exercised their democratic rights by voting in a peaceful electoral process.
“The Rivers State electorate shouldn’t be put on trial for exercising their franchise and upholding the rule of law,” he stated, adding that Governor Siminalayi Fubara deserves commendation for conducting a transparent local government and council election without partisan pressure or interference.
“Governor Fubara’s leadership in allowing a fair election, without insisting on victory for his party, the PDP, showcases a democratic model that other leaders should emulate,” Okeke remarked. He emphasized that democracy thrives on genuine competition and accountability, highlighting that his own party, the APP, has emerged as a viable option for Rivers citizens to hold their leaders accountable.
Okeke further argued that the economic challenges facing Nigeria make it especially unjust to withhold these essential funds, which he said are crucial for the government and parties alike to fulfill their obligations to the people. “Starving the state government of the logistics needed to carry out its responsibilities only weakens democratic accountability, especially in a time of economic hardship,” he said.
He called on the federal government to release the funds without delay, stressing that timely action could alleviate potential suffering among Rivers citizens. “We urge the federal government to demonstrate compassion and commitment to democratic principles by releasing the allocations immediately, pending the determination of the appeal,” Okeke stated.
