The recent delegation by some members of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo to Ogun State has drawn sharp criticism from the United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide, which has condemned what it perceives as actions undermining the unity and dignity of the Igbo nation. In a strongly worded statement, UNIEC accused certain “self-styled Igbo leaders” of perpetuating a pattern of betrayal and humiliation against the Igbo people since the mid-1990s.
Citing a series of grievances, UNIEC highlighted issues such as the politicization of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, corruption in restructuring efforts, and the marginalization of the Rivers Igbo. The council further alleged that some leaders have been complicit in actions that erode the Igbo socio-cultural foundation, from introducing harmful practices to colluding with external interests detrimental to Igbo unity.
Particularly contentious is the council’s claim that these actions have paved the way for the denial of Rivers Igbo their constitutional right to produce the next Ohanaeze President-General. UNIEC underscored the importance of maintaining constitutional rotations and warned against external influences seeking to interfere in Igbo affairs.
The statement concluded with a call for unity among the Igbo and reaffirmed its support for the peaceful transition of leadership within Ohanaeze, emphasizing the need for a Rivers Igbo representative to assume the position of President-General by January 2025.
Signed by Justice Alpha Ikpeama, Director-General, and Prof. Obasi Igwe, Director of Media and Publicity, the UNIEC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the interests and aspirations of the Igbo people, urging all stakeholders to uphold the principles of equity and justice.
