The Ihiala community in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State has commenced profiling of both indigenes and non-indigenes residing in the area to identify those responsible for the killing of seven persons during a funeral last month.
In addition, the community has declared a four-day mourning period, beginning Monday, January 6, 2025, to honor the victims and hold prayers for the repose of their souls.
Gunmen had stormed a funeral ceremony at Ubahuekwem Ihiala, resulting in the tragic death of seven persons.
In a statement signed by the palace Secretary Barr Emmanuel Mkpo and endorsed by the traditional ruler, Igwe Thomas Obidiegwu, it was announced that the community is taking steps to enhance security and ensure justice for the victims.
According to the statement:
“A comprehensive profiling of residents will be conducted across all villages in Ihiala to ensure proper identification and promote heightened vigilance within the community. This is part of our measures to address security concerns.”
Igwe Obidiegwu also commended the swift actions of the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo, particularly his declaration of a state of emergency on insecurity in Ihiala. The monarch pledged the community’s full support for all initiatives aimed at restoring peace and security in the area.
The statement further assured that the people of Ihiala remain united in their determination to support the governor’s efforts to ensure justice for the victims while fostering long-term peace and safety in the town.
It also highlighted the contributions of the Ihekamba Onuchukwu family of Umuike Ubahuekwem Ihiala, known for their significant role in the development of the community.
The mourning period will conclude on Thursday, January 9, with prayers at public gatherings across the community.
