The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has yet to receive a formal request from the Senate to conduct a by-election for the vacant Anambra South senatorial seat, following the passing of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah in July 2024.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ dialogue organized by the International Press Centre (IPC) in Awka, Elizabeth Agu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Anambra State, assured that INEC is prepared to conduct the election once the Senate officially communicates the need for a replacement.
“INEC is ready for the Anambra South senatorial district by-election, but the Senate has to write us to request the replacement of the vacant seat before we can conduct the election,” Agu stated.
The late Senator Ubah, a prominent political figure and representative of Anambra South, passed away in a London hospital, leaving his seat in the National Assembly vacant. The delay in the Senate’s request has left the district without representation in the upper legislative chamber.
