Nine months after assuming office, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has been transferred out of the state.
In his place, Livingston Ikioye Urutuku has been deployed as the new Commissioner of Police for Anambra State.
Itam’s transfer follows the retirement of his predecessor, Aderemi Adeoye, who left the force, necessitating a leadership change in the state’s police command.
During his tenure, Itam grappled with persistent security challenges, including a surge in kidnappings, cult-related violence, and targeted killings.
Though no official reason has been given for his removal, sources suggest it may be linked to the rising crime rate, which some believe overwhelmed the former CP.
Compounding the situation was the recent launch of the Agunechemba Security Squad, which, within three weeks of its establishment, took over key security operations in the state.
Human rights activist Comrade Osita Obi criticized Itam’s tenure, stating that Anambra witnessed an unprecedented rise in crime under his leadership.
“He didn’t police Anambra well. One of the worst CPs in the history of the state. Under him, Anambra witnessed the worst crime rate,” Obi remarked.
The Police Service Commission (PSC) described the decision as a response to the state’s growing security concerns.
According to Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations, PSC Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu has directed the new CP to settle in quickly and ensure continuity in law enforcement.
Urutuku has also been tasked with demonstrating unwavering commitment to duty and contributing to the nationwide fight against criminal elements.
The Commission’s decision has been officially communicated to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation.
