There is growing concern over the rising tension in Delta State following the reported killing of a youth, Ogidi Mena, by a police officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, at the Okpe Police Station in Effurun.
Reacting to the development, a former Senatorial aspirant for Anambra South, Barr. Donald Amamgbo, has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as “tragic, disturbing, and unacceptable.”
In a statement made available to journalists, Amamgbo said the act raises serious questions about accountability and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force, warning that such incidents erode public trust in security institutions.
He called for a thorough, transparent, and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, stressing that justice must be served.
“The truth must be uncovered without bias, and anyone found culpable must be brought to justice in accordance with the law. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done,” he stated.
The legal practitioner further urged the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to use the incident as a moment for introspection and reform, particularly in strengthening internal disciplinary measures and promoting respect for human rights.
Amamgbo also appealed to youths in Delta State, especially in Effurun, to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate the situation.
While acknowledging their grievances, he cautioned that violent protests could be hijacked by criminal elements, thereby worsening the crisis.
He emphasized the need for restraint and lawful engagement, noting that maintaining peace is essential to achieving justice and preventing further breakdown of law and order.
The incident has reportedly sparked clashes between aggrieved youths and police authorities in the area, heightening fears of escalation if not swiftly addressed by relevant authorities.
