Members and stakeholders of the Nigerian Democratic Congress in Anambra State have condemned what they described as the alleged marginalization and sidestepping of the party’s State Chairman, Mr. David Patrick Chukwudifu.
The party members made their position known during a peaceful rally held in Onitsha on Thursday, where they passed a vote of confidence on the state chairman while carrying placards expressing their grievances and accusing the Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District, Tony Nwoye, of alleged complicity in the ongoing crisis.
Addressing journalists during the rally on Thursday, May 21, 2027, a party stakeholder, Mr. Stephen Ajaraogu, who spoke on behalf of the protesters, said the members would no longer tolerate what he described as continued attempts to sideline the duly recognized state leadership of the party.
Ajaraogu stated that party faithful who laboured and sacrificed for the growth of the party over the years should not be pushed aside now that the party is gaining prominence in the state.
“We are warning everybody involved in the current hijacking of the party structure at the state level to desist from such actions in order to avoid a repeat of what happened in the African Democratic Congress, ADC,” he said.
According to him, the crisis that engulfed ADC was fueled by attempts by certain politicians to hijack the party structure, adding that similar actions were allegedly being replicated within the Anambra State chapter of NDC.
He further explained that the rally was organized by Anambra youths under the platform of NDC to send a strong message to both the state and national leadership of the party that the current developments were not in the best interest of the party.
“As far as NDC is concerned in Anambra State, every activity concerning the party should be channeled through the only recognized structure under the able leadership of the State Chairman, Mr. David Patrick Chukwudifu,” Ajaraogu stated.
In her reaction, Mrs. Nkechi Aneke called on the politicians allegedly involved in the crisis to allow the State Chairman, Mr. David Patrick Chukwudifu, to continue leading the party without interference, considering his immense sacrifices and selfless contributions toward the growth of the party.
She maintained that it was unfair to sideline someone who had invested enormously in the party, both financially and otherwise, at a time the party was gaining national recognition.
“This march is a clear demonstration of our collective resolve to stand firmly with our State Chairman, Mr. David Patrick Chukwudifu, who has remained committed to the party through thick and thin until it attained national relevance,” she stated.
“He remains the only chairman we recognize in Anambra State. Senator Tony Nwoye should not attempt to impose another chairman on the party structure in the state,” Aneke added.
The group also warned against any alleged plot to hijack the party structure in disregard of the substantive leadership currently recognized by party members in the state.
