Coal City University, Enugu, has dismissed recent publications by Sahara Reporters as false, misleading, and injurious to its reputation, insisting that the reports misrepresented facts concerning the institution’s operations and administration.
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 18, 2026, the university’s management accused the online media platform of publishing unverified allegations and presenting a distorted narrative capable of misleading the public and undermining confidence in the institution.
The university specifically refuted claims of salary arrears and staff strike actions, maintaining that academic and administrative activities remain uninterrupted and are proceeding normally across the institution.
Addressing reports surrounding an incident involving a student and certain university personnel on June 10, management disclosed that all individuals directly connected to the matter had already been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation. It added that a Review Committee had been constituted to conduct a thorough and impartial examination of the incident.
According to the university, the student involved is a beneficiary of its scholarship programme. However, management stressed that the student’s status would not influence the investigative process, assuring stakeholders that fairness, transparency, and accountability would guide the committee’s work.
Coal City University also rejected allegations relating to its academic programmes, particularly claims contained in an earlier March 2026 publication alleging that the institution admitted students beyond approved limits into a law programme. The university clarified that it neither operates a Faculty of Law nor offers an LL.B. degree programme, describing the allegation as entirely baseless.
The institution further faulted Sahara Reporters for allegedly failing to provide it with sufficient opportunity to respond to the claims before publication, arguing that such an omission violated the principles of balanced and responsible journalism.
Consequently, the university announced that it had instructed its legal advisers to seek an immediate retraction and correction of the reports. Management maintained that media organisations have a responsibility to ensure accuracy, fairness, and proper verification before publishing allegations capable of damaging reputations.
Reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence, institutional integrity, and student development, Coal City University stated that it would pursue all lawful avenues necessary to protect its reputation against what it described as false, malicious, and defamatory allegations.
