Former Anambra South Senatorial aspirant, Barr. Donald Chidi Amamgbo, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic collapse of the Elite Hostel building at Amokpala, Oko, in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, describing the incident as a devastating loss that has plunged many families into grief.

Reacting to reports that one of the victims trapped beneath the rubble, identified as “Vee,” was found dead while rescue operations remain ongoing, Amamgbo extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives.

He also wished the injured victims a speedy recovery and commended the efforts of emergency responders, volunteers, community leaders, and all those involved in the rescue mission.

According to Amamgbo, the tragedy raises serious questions that must be addressed through a comprehensive, transparent, and independent investigation to determine the actual cause of the building collapse.

“The loss of innocent lives in circumstances such as this is both painful and unacceptable. The people deserve answers, and every factor that contributed to this disaster must be thoroughly investigated,” he said.

The legal practitioner called for a detailed probe into the activities of the contractor responsible for the construction of the building, as well as all professionals and agencies connected to the project, stressing that anyone found culpable should be held accountable in accordance with the law.

He noted that if the collapse resulted from substandard construction, poor engineering practices, the use of inferior materials, or violations of approved building standards, those responsible must face the full consequences of their actions.

Barr. Amamgbo further urged government at all levels, as well as relevant building control and regulatory institutions, to strengthen the enforcement of building codes and compliance guidelines to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

He emphasized that routine inspections, strict monitoring of construction projects, and the engagement of qualified professionals are critical measures needed to safeguard lives and property.

“The unfortunate incident serves as a reminder that regulatory agencies must remain vigilant in enforcing building standards. Compliance should never be compromised, and every construction project must be subjected to proper oversight from foundation to completion,” he stated.

The former senatorial aspirant also stressed the importance of transparency in the investigative process, urging authorities to make their findings public in order to restore confidence in the system and reassure citizens that justice will be served.

According to him, a transparent investigation will not only help uncover the true cause of the collapse but also strengthen public trust in government institutions responsible for protecting lives and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

As rescue operations continue at the scene, Amamgbo called on members of the public to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and continue supporting affected families and rescue workers through prayers and humanitarian assistance.

He prayed that God grants eternal rest to the souls of the departed, comfort to grieving families, healing to the injured, and success to all those engaged in the ongoing rescue efforts.
