President Bola Tinubu GCFR has directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to provide adequate and non-partisan security protection for all presidential candidates and their running mates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The directive covers major contenders, including African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi; Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; as well as other candidates participating in the presidential race.
A source familiar with the security arrangements said the President had instructed the security agencies to maintain a level playing field and ensure that political differences do not expose candidates to security risks. According to the source, the DSS has already strengthened its protective operations around presidential candidates and their deputies, with some candidates also submitting specific requirements for their security architecture.
The source said the arrangement extends to governorship candidates and their running mates across the country, while areas identified as potential flashpoints during National Assembly and State House of Assembly elections have been placed under heightened surveillance.
“The President is determined to win a free and fair poll. As a democrat, he has security agencies to ensure a level playing field for all,” the source said. The security measures are aimed at creating an environment where candidates can campaign without intimidation or unnecessary restrictions, while helping security agencies prevent violence and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
