The establishment of Okpoko General Hospital in March 2024 has been a transformative milestone for the Okpoko community in Ogbaru council area of Anambra State. This facility, the first of its kind in the area, represents Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to ensuring quality and accessible healthcare for all, particularly in underserved communities.

Speaking to journalists on the impact of the hospital on Thursday, Pharm. Ekene Nelson, the pharmacist in charge, expressed immense gratitude to Governor Soludo for his visionary leadership and prioritization of healthcare. “Before this hospital, residents of Okpoko faced significant challenges accessing medical care. Today, the story has changed,” Pharm. Nelson remarked.

The hospital, equipped with about five wards capable of accommodating 10 patients each, has already made a significant difference. Free antenatal care and child delivery services, a cornerstone of Governor Soludo’s healthcare policy, have not only eased financial burdens but also brought smiles to families. Pharm. Nelson recounted the joy of parents who recently welcomed twins at the hospital at no cost, saying, “Their gratitude was overwhelming, considering the high expenses of private hospitals.”

The facility boasts a diverse team of medical professionals, including two consultants, three doctors, a dentist, and an optometrist. This multidisciplinary team ensures the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services. While the hospital is already functional, plans are underway to further enhance its capabilities. The imminent arrival of electric fans and air conditioners will improve patient comfort, and once the theatre is fully equipped, the hospital will offer advanced surgical care.

Pharm. Nelson also highlighted the government’s provision of essential drugs and the upcoming free medical outreach program, which promises to extend care to even more residents. The free antenatal initiative, in particular, has been lauded for its positive impact, contributing to several successful deliveries and reducing maternal and child mortality rates in the community.

According to one of the caregivers, Mrs. Chinwe Okolo, the Okpoko residents’ healthcare conditions have improved significantly since the governor established the hospital. She noted that they are committed to supporting his administration, especially during his re-election campaign.

The establishment of Okpoko General Hospital is more than just a healthcare facility; it is a testament to Governor Soludo’s vision of inclusive development. By bridging the gap in healthcare access, this initiative has set a precedent for improving the quality of life in Okpoko and beyond. Residents now have hope and confidence that their health and well-being are being prioritized, marking a new era of progress for the community.

With continued investment in healthcare infrastructure and services, the people of Okpoko are optimistic about a healthier, brighter future under Governor Soludo’s leadership.
